Dan Schmitt

LtCol Schmitt enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1988 and served as a Rifleman during Operation Desert Shield / Storm and as a patrol leader for JTF-6 anti-narcotics operations, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1994 after graduating from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Leisure Studies. Upon completion of Infantry Officer Course, LtCol Schmitt was assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment as a Rifle Platoon Commander, Mortar Platoon Commander and Rifle Company Commander, deploying on several contingency operations to Cuba, Albania, Macedonia and Kosovo. In 1999, LtCol Schmitt was assigned as an Infantry Instructor at Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron – 1. In 2001, LtCol Schmitt was assigned as a Weapons Company Commander 3d Battalion, 7th Marines where he led his company in the invasion of Iraq and subsequent stability operations as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In late 2003, he was assigned to the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory (MCWL) in Quantico, Virginia as the OIC of Project Metropolis, a live force experimental organization focused on urban warfighting concepts. LtCol Schmitt also led live force experimentation in support of the Marine Corps concepts for Distributed Operations. LtCol Schmitt also attended and graduated the U.S. Army Red Team Leader’s course while assigned to MCWL.

He attended the Marine Corps School for Advanced Warfighting from 2006 to 2007 and was later assigned to I MEF in Camp Pendleton, California as an operational planner, deploying twice to Iraq. LtCol Schmitt subsequently was assigned to advisor duty, serving as the Brigade Advisor, 28th Iraqi Army Brigade on the Syrian border. Upon completion of his advisor tour, LtCol Schmitt was posted as the Officer in Charge, I MEF Advisor Training Group and then to MAGTF Staff Training Program, Quantico VA.

Upon command selection, LtCol Schmitt assumed command of 3rd battalion, Sixth Marine Regiment at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and served as the Regional Command South West main effort, deploying to Marjah, Afghanistan. Upon completion of his command tour, LtCol Schmitt served as the Regimental Executive Officer, 8th Marine Regiment.

LtCol Schmitt was next assigned to the Futures Assessment Division, Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory / Futures Directorate. Additionally, he served as the threat force commander for live force experimentation. LtCol Schmitt is currently assigned as the OIC, Field Testing Branch, Experiment Division, Marine Corps Warfighting Lab, responsible for the live force activities of the SEA DRAGON 2025 experiment campaign.
